While VR is useful for training in industry, the game changer for industry 4.0 is AR, which enables one to link virtual models to real world objects such as cars & machines. A missing link today is the reliable, real-time registration between virtual & real worlds.
This conference addresses “simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)” techniques and the decades-old challenge of “automatic object recognition”. The latter is a MUST to locate real objects of interest without having to place visual markers on them. Use cases are design (e.g. to superpose a car model to a real car & to sit in it), production (to give step-by-step assembly instructions), maintenance & repair (to similarly guide), distribution (to assist workers in moving in a warehouse & “pickers” in finding objects).
